PETALING JAYA: A madrasah teacher in Sik, Kedah has been arrested on suspicion of beating an eight-year-old pupil with a PVC pipe, resulting in bruises and swelling to the body, police said today.

Sik police chief Abdull Razak Osman said the 27-year-old suspect was released on Thursday, having been bailed by a guarantor with legal representation.

He said the victim’s foster father filed a report on Nov 11 after he complained of pain when sitting.

“The complainant was shocked to see the bruises and immediately went to the Sik police station to file a report,” Razak said in a statement.

He said the suspect was apprehended the next day.

“Medical experts confirmed the victim suffered ‘soft tissue injuries’,” he said.

Razak said the case has been referred to the Kedah deputy public prosecutor and the suspect will likely be charged with child abuse under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
